Notes
Please consider adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization. They are trying very hard to save the lives of deserving family pets.
The German shephard in the picture came from Chicago Animal Control - $65 for the adoption including neutering, shots, microchip and city tags. The border collies in the picture are from Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue.
Shelters and rescues are always in need of volunteers to help at the facility (walking, bathing dogs) or by fostering. If you can't permanently house a pet, but love to be around animals, this is an opportunity waiting for you!
Just a few quick and very generalized statements on the difference between shelters and rescues. These are generalizations and do not apply to every shelter or rescue (ie, actual mileage my vary). Both sets are non-profit and are geared for finding homes for homeless animals. Both will evaluate dog temperaments and only put dogs up for adoption that they believe are suitable for family pets. In rescues, many are breed specific and foster an animal for weeks or months before finding a permanent placement. Because of the expense in caring for a dog the lengthened time, adoption through a rescue can be more expensive; however, the dog is often evaluated in several different environments and the temperment of the dog is better understood. An adoption application through a rescue may take longer to process than a shelter.
